About the Role
Superior Industrial Maintenance is looking for a Multi-craft Technician to assist with a nested facility based in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The Industrial Insulator is responsible for safely applying insulating materials to pipes or ductwork, or other mechanical systems in order to help control and maintain temperature, and for performing all assigned tasks in accordance with customer and host facility policies and procedures and Federal, State and Local Laws.
General knowledge of worksite safety, painting, coatings and surface preparation is required and experience in the construction trades is a major plus.
- Measure and cut insulation for covering surfaces, using tape measures, handsaws, knives, and scissors.
- Measure materials or objects for installation or assembly.
- Cut insulation, vinyl or other flexible materials.
- Remove or seal off old asbestos insulation, following safety procedures.
- Remove worn, damaged or outdated materials from work areas.
- Fit insulation around obstructions, and shape insulating materials and protective coverings as required.
- Install insulation in equipment or structures.
- Determine the amounts and types of insulation needed, and methods of installation, based on factors such as location, surface shape, and equipment use.
- Select construction materials.
- Install sheet metal around insulated pipes with screws to protect the insulation from weather conditions or physical damage.
- Apply, remove, and repair insulation on industrial equipment, pipes, ductwork, or other mechanical systems such as heat exchangers, tanks, and vessels, to help control noise and maintain temperatures.
- Install insulation on equipment or structures.
- Select appropriate insulation, such as fiberglass, Styrofoam, or cork, based on the heat retaining or excluding characteristics of the material.
- Select construction materials.
- Review blueprints or specifications to determine work requirements.
- Cover, seal, or finish insulated surfaces or access holes with plastic covers, canvas strips, sealants, tape, cement, or asphalt mastic.
- Install insulation in equipment or structures.
- Apply sealants or other protective coatings.
- Prepare surfaces for insulation application by brushing or spreading on adhesives, cement, or asphalt, or by attaching metal pins to surfaces.
- Prepare surfaces for finishing.
- Apply adhesives to construction materials.
- Distribute insulating materials evenly into small spaces within floors, ceilings, or walls, using blowers and hose attachments or cement mortar.
- Install insulation in equipment or structures.
- Set up containment to protect customer assets on projects.
- Pressure wash to remove surface contaminants from surfaces before coatings applications.
- Follows and reviews all safety operating protocol outlined by Project Manager, Superintendent, and Foreman on the job.
- Applies coatings to surfaces including concrete floors, ceilings, and other surfaces

- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to talk and/or hear, and/or use hands and fingers to handle or touch objects, tools, or controls. The employee is frequently required to stand, and/or walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move and/or pull up to 50 pounds (up to 100 pounds with assistance) of insulation, which may include lifting 50 pounds (up to 100 pounds with assistance) of insulation above shoulders (6-7 feet). Must also be capable of climbing onto trailers or trucks and onto racks to secure and move material, as well as climbing ladders to access scaffolding up to high, precarious places. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
Safety and Security:
Wears appropriate safety equipment and PPE (personal protective equipment) at all times. Examples of PPE would be Tyvek suits, respiratory equipment, rain suits, etc. Attains and learns safety rules and practices in the immediate work environment. Be aware of and comply with all SIMCO policies and procedures. Applies rules and practices to reduce risk and liability.
Physical Requirements and Environmental Conditions:
- Stand on feet for a minimum of 10 hours a day.
- Withstand high levels of dust and noise.
- Withstand working conditions of extreme heat and cold temperatures.
- Wear respiratory protection for extended periods of time in demanding atmospheres.
- Working from heights (scaffold, manlifts, scissor lifts, etc.).
- Responsible for maintaining a clean work area by transporting material in and out of work area.
- Must wear personal protective equipment to protect eyes, ears, nose and skin.
- Frequent walking, bending, stooping, lifting, pushing, pulling and carrying objects are required.
- Must be able to climb up and down ladders.
- Must be physically able to lift and carry heavy objects such as hoses and other blasting equipment on a regular basis that can weigh up to 100 lbs.
- Work in confined space areas.
- Working at various heights.
- Wear appropriate fall protection equipment, as needed.
All employment at Superior is contingent upon successfully completing a drug screen and background check. Must successfully receive clearance to wear and use PPE including respiratory fit testing.
